Explore ICN iLearn iLearn How-To GuideBefore You Choose a CourseFor an ICN course to count toward TASN certification, it should be directly related to school nutrition and include a USDA Professional Standards code. 1. Check the Professional Standards code listed with the course. 2. Use the first digit of the code to identify the Key Area. 3. Make sure the course fits the requirements for your TASN certification level. 4. Keep your completion certificate for your certification records. USDA Professional Standards Key AreasTASN certification is organized around four USDA Professional Standards Key Areas. Key Area 1 — Nutrition Professional Standards codes beginning with 1, including topics such as nutrition, menu planning and special diets.
Key Area 2 — Operations Professional Standards codes beginning with 2, including food safety, food production, purchasing and program operations.
Key Area 3 — Administration Professional Standards codes beginning with 3, including financial management, human resources and program management.
Key Area 4 — Communications & Marketing Professional Standards codes beginning with 4, including communication, customer service and marketing.
TASN Certification Hours at a GlanceUse this as a quick reference for initial certification hours. Work experience and other requirements may also apply, so always review the current Certification Handbook before applying. Level 1 — 16 Hours 4 hours Food Safety • 4 hours Sanitation • 4 hours Customer Service • 4 hours Recognizing Reimbursable Meals / Meal Patterns
Level 2 — 40 Hours 10 hours in each of the four Key Areas.
Level 3 — 50 Hours 10 hours in each Key Area plus 10 additional hours in any Key Area.
Level 4 — 60 Hours 12 hours in each Key Area plus 12 additional hours in any Key Area.
Level 5 — 75 Hours 15 hours in each Key Area plus 15 additional hours in any Key Area.
Certification requirements also include TASN membership, applicable school foodservice experience and required documentation.
